Briefly about the holy martyr Tatyana. Holy Martyr Tatiana of Rome

The name of the martyr Tatyana in our church history is associated with the celebration of the "student's day", which received the name - "Tatiana's Day"

The Holy Martyr Tatiana was born into a noble Roman family - her father was elected consul three times. He was a secret Christian and raised a daughter devoted to God and the Church. Having reached adulthood, Tatyana did not marry and gave all her strength to the Church. She was made a deaconess in one of the Roman churches and served God, caring for the sick in fasting and prayer and helping those in need. Tatyana had to crown her righteousness with the crown of martyrdom.

When sixteen-year-old Alexander Severus (222-235) began to rule Rome, all power was concentrated in the hands of worst enemy and persecutor of Christians Ulpian. Christian blood flowed like a river. Deaconess Tatyana was also captured. When they brought her to the temple of Apollo to force her to sacrifice to the idol, the saint prayed, and suddenly an earthquake occurred, the idol was blown to pieces, and part of the temple collapsed and crushed the priests and many pagans. The demon who lived in the idol fled with a cry from that place, while everyone saw a shadow sweeping through the air.

Then they began to beat the holy virgin, gouged out her eyes, but she endured everything courageously, praying for her tormentors that the Lord would open their spiritual eyes to them. And the Lord heeded the prayer of His servant. It was revealed to the executioners that four angels surrounded the saint and deflected blows from her, and they heard a Voice from heaven addressed to the holy martyr. All of them, eight people, believed in Christ and fell at the feet of Saint Tatiana, asking them to forgive them their sin against her. For confessing themselves as Christians, they were tortured and executed, having received Baptism in blood.

The next day, Saint Tatiana was again given over to torment: they stripped her naked, beat her, began to cut her body with razors, and then instead of blood, milk flowed from the wounds and a fragrance spread in the air. The tormentors were exhausted and declared that someone invisible was beating them with iron sticks, nine of them died immediately. They threw the saint into prison, where she prayed all night and sang praises to the Lord with the angels. A new morning came, and Saint Tatiana was again brought to trial.

The amazed tormentors saw that after so many terrible torments she appeared completely healthy and even more radiant and beautiful than before. She was persuaded to make a sacrifice to the goddess Diana. The saint pretended to agree, and they brought her to the temple. Saint Tatiana crossed herself and began to pray. Suddenly there was a deafening thunderclap, and lightning incinerated the idol, the victims and the priests.

The martyr was again cruelly tortured, and at night they again threw her into prison, and again the Angels of God appeared to her and healed her wounds. The next day Saint Tatiana was brought to the circus and a hungry lion was released on her; but the beast did not touch the saint and began meekly licking her feet. They wanted to drive the lion back into the cage, and then he tore one of the tormentors to pieces. Tatyana was thrown into the fire, but the fire did not harm the martyr either. The pagans, thinking that she was a sorceress, cut off her hair to deprive her of magical power, and locked her in the temple of Zeus. But the power of God cannot be taken away. On the third day the priests came, surrounded by a crowd, preparing to offer sacrifices. Having opened the temple, they saw an idol thrown into the dust and the holy martyr Tatyana, joyfully calling on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

All the tortures were exhausted, the saint was sentenced to death, and the courageous sufferer was beheaded with a sword. Together with her, as a Christian, the father of Saint Tatiana was also executed, having revealed to her the truths of the faith of Christ. It happened on January 12, 226.

Since the middle of the 18th century, the day of memory of the martyr Tatyana has been considered "student day".

Saint Tatiana: life summary

Holy Martyr Tatiana (Tatiana) was born in ancient rome in a family of rich and noble parents. Her father, three times a consul, was a secret Christian and raised his daughter in piety, devoted to God and the Church.

Having reached adulthood, Tatyana rejected all the joys of a prosperous life and devoted herself completely to the church. Consciously, she refused marriage and chose the path of the "bride of Christ", taking a vow of chastity. During her virtuous life, Tatyana was appointed deaconess, thus becoming the first woman who could participate in worship. Before her, only male priests could take the rank of deaconess.

It was difficult for Christians in those days in Rome. The city was pagan and very religious. Not a single important event was complete without a sacrifice to idols - whether it was the accession to the throne of a new emperor or the military victories of Roman legionnaires, the onset of a new year or the birth of a child. There were few Christians in Rome, and almost all of them were in hiding, fearing reprisals from the authorities.

Saint Tatiana the Great Martyr

During the next persecution of Christians under Emperor Alexander Severus (reigned from 222 to 235), Tatyana was seized and brought to the temple of Apollo, where they tried to force her to bow to the statue of this pagan god. The girl offered a prayer to Jesus Christ, after which an earthquake suddenly began, part of the temple, along with the statue of Apollo, collapsed, crushing the priests and many pagans under them.

Tatyana was tortured for several days: they beat, tortured, burned at the stake, but God protected her, and even the traces of cruel torture disappeared from her body. In anger, the tormentors imprisoned her again, and the next day Tatyana was thrown into the arena of the Colosseum to be torn to pieces by a lion, but he bowed down before her and licked her hands.

The judges, deciding that the girl was engaged in sorcery with the help of her hair, cut them off and locked her for two days in the temple of Zeus. On the third day, the priests, having come to the temple to sacrifice to Zeus, found his statue broken, and Tatyana alive.

After that, she was sentenced to death, and on January 12, 226, Tatyana was beheaded.

Together with Tatyana, her father was also executed. Seeing the suffering of his daughter, he did not want to remain a secret Christian and decided to open up and share the suffering with her.

Veneration of the Holy Martyr Tatyana

For such torment for the sake of faith, Tatiana was canonized, and her day is usually honored on January 25th. Prayers are traditionally read. And ordinary parishioners ask Tatyana to give them happiness, patience, and success in their studies.

Saint Tatiana is revered in both the Orthodox and Catholic churches, but her veneration has spread widely only among Eastern Christians.

Life of the Holy Martyr Tatyana

Rome by the end of the II century was a rich city. Between the hills stretched a huge Colosseum, holidays were held in it. Majestic arches rose above the streets, and at the foot of the Capitol stood the temples of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Here the pagan gods were worshiped by the Romans. There were Christians in the city, but they were hiding, fearing persecution by the authorities. One of them was a consul.

Tatyana's childhood

Occupying a high position, this man lived in abundance. When his daughter was born, he named her Tatiana and raised her as a Christian. Her childhood was not burdened with any worries. Gradually, from a girl, she turned into a beautiful girl. Her snow-white face was framed by long curly golden-brown curls. But the most wonderful were her eyes. They shone with unusual kindness, but there was a drop of sadness in them. Every night she prayed and kept repeating that she wanted to serve the Lord. During the day she was always reasonable, tried to help people.

People noticed her beauty and kindness. Many young people came to her father to get married, but Tatyana refused everyone. Her father tried to persuade her to marry. The girl answered that she loved only the Lord and would devote her life only to Him. Realizing that she would not change her decision, the loving father did not accept more suitors, refusing them immediately.

Tatyana - "organizer"

One day the consul returned home excited. Emperor Heliogabal was killed. A new ruler Alexander Sever took his place. The Romans expected change. The new emperor was different from his predecessor. In his house, in addition to sculptures of Apollo and Orpheus, there was an image of Christ. Alexander's mother was a Christian and told her son a lot about her faith. Despite the fact that the young emperor remained a pagan, he was calm about the new teaching, considering Jesus as another god. Christians no longer feared persecution. They created their own community in Rome and, of course, Tatiana was among them.

She spent every day at work. Seeing her virtue, the bishop appointed the girl a deaconess. Now she helped believers even more, cared for the sick. Thanks to her care, the needy were given food and clothing, the sick recovered. The poor and orphans always received help from her. Whatever she took on, everything worked out for the best. The fame of her kindness spread far beyond the Christian community.

Tatyana the martyr

In addition to Alexander Sever, the state council ruled the country. Many of its members were unhappy that Christians were given freedom. The Roman bishop was especially indignant. As the mayor, he had the right to issue decrees, which were to be strictly followed. Enlisting the support of the council, he wrote a law according to which Christians had to worship pagan gods, otherwise they would be executed.

From that moment on, the Christian community ceased to exist. Tatyana was brought by force to the Temple of Apollo. First, she was offered to bow to a pagan god. “For me, there is only one God - Jesus Christ,” she answered and began to pray. At that moment, there was a terrible roar. One of the statues of Apollo fell and broke into pieces. And after that, the wall of the temple collapsed. The pagans attacked the girl. But every time they struck, they experienced pain, as if their hands were hitting stones. At this time, Tatyana prayed that the Lord would forgive them. And suddenly something extraordinary happened: the tormentors saw angels next to the girl. Having believed in Christ, they openly declared this, for which they were immediately executed.

The next day, Tatyana was brought to court again. She didn't have a single wound. The torturers were surprised, but, having received the order of the mayor, they again began torturing. They felt that the angels were protecting Tatiana and even hitting back at them. At the end of the day, nine tormentors were left lying dead, and Tatyana was taken back to the dungeon.

And on the third day, the girl appeared before the judges completely healthy. The pagans were stunned, it seemed to them that she became even more beautiful than she was. "Sacrifice Diana and we will let you go!" the judges exclaimed. Tatyana asked to be taken to the temple of the pagan goddess. As soon as she approached him, crossed herself and began to pray, thunder rang out and lightning struck the building. The temple was destroyed.

Seeing this, the pagans again began to torture Tatyana, but the next day she again appeared before them unharmed. Considering her a witch, her enemies cut her hair, thinking that it was in them that her strength lies. But they were wrong. Tatyana was left overnight in the temple of Zeus, and in the morning they saw the destroyed idol and her in good health.

Saint Tatiana, as a martyr of the first centuries of Christianity, is revered both in the Orthodox and in Catholic churches. Often on icons the holy martyr Tatiana is depicted with a bay leaf in her hands. The laurel reminds us that she was martyred in the pagan temple of the god Apollo: the laurel wreath in the hair of this supreme ancient deity is his invariable attribute. Thus, the laurel in the hands of the Christian saint indicates that, through her martyrdom, she won a spiritual victory over paganism through the power of Christ's faith in the person of one of the characters in the pantheon of Roman gods.

How does the icon protect

First of all, the holy martyr Tatyana is the patroness of students. If you are getting a higher education, or someone you know, or your children, St. Tatiana is your first helper. Even if an applicant turns to St. Tatiana, this will be a very true appeal. So before a test or examination session, in addition to having knowledge, it is good to reinforce your luck in the exam with the intercession of the patron saint, and if you or your child decide to get a higher education, get this icon. It will be very useful and as a gift to a newly minted student as a reward for entering a university. And, of course, Saint Tatiana is the intercessor and patroness of all Tatianas, and it would be nice for them to have their own personalized icon.

The meaning of the icon

The name Tatiana in Greek means founder. It is not known for what reasons Empress Catherine signed the Decree on the establishment of Moscow University on that very day, but Saint Tatiana became a real patron of the student brethren. The meek, but strong-willed martyr now has no oblivion, for students in the world will not disappear at all times.

The idea of opening the first university in Moscow belongs to M.V. Lomonosov and Count I.I. Shuvalov. The corresponding petition was submitted by the count to Empress Elizaveta Petrovna in 1755 on January 12 (January 25, according to New Style), on the name day of his mother, Tatyana Shuvalova. The date when the decree was signed became the birthday of the university.

Later, when a house church was being created under him, it was consecrated in honor of the holy martyr Tatiana.

Metropolitan Platon said to the assembled scholars and students: “The School of Sciences and the School of Christ began to be united: worldly wisdom brought into the sanctuary of the Lord becomes sanctified; one helps the other, but moreover, one affirms the other. These words meant that science is not opposed to faith, but, on the contrary, helps it.

In the Church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana, university holidays were held, students were married in it, and the future poetess Marina Tsvetaeva was baptized. It also said goodbye to great people: N.V. Gogol, S.M. Solovyov, V.O. Klyuchevsky, A.A. Fet.

After the revolution, an order was issued to close all churches located at educational institutions. In 1918 the university church was closed. The inscription: “The Light of Christ enlightens everyone” disappeared from the facade of the building and “Science for the working people” appeared. There was a library in the room; in the middle of the 20th century, a student theater operated there.

In 1995 the temple was restored. Two particles of relics from the right hand (right hand) of the martyr Tatiana were transported to it, one was placed in the icon, the other was placed in the reliquary.

The Holy Martyr Tatiana was born in Rome into a rich and noble family. (her father was consul three times). Her parents secretly professed Christianity and raised their daughter in piety and faith in God.

Having reached adulthood, Tatiana decided not to marry, but to take a vow of chastity and devote herself to serving the church. Tatiana was amazingly pretty. Her delicate, pale face was framed by thick brown hair. A slender figure, a kind disposition, and reasonableness, surprising for her age, attracted the attention of others to her. She did not at all resemble the spoiled Romans of her circle. On the contrary, she was undemanding and executive. Many young people from wealthy families wooed Tatiana, even her father persuaded her to start a family. But she told him: "Father, my heart has long been given to the Lord, and no force will force me to renounce this love!" And her father left her alone, and resolutely refused the suitors.

Tatiana entered the Christian community of Rome, and the bishop, seeing the zeal of the girl, appointed her a deaconess. Now she had many responsibilities: visiting and caring for sick women, preparing for baptism, supervising worship meetings. She was almost never at home, rarely saw her father, but she was happy. For by helping the needy, she served the Lord! Tatiana could not sleep or eat for days, caring for the sick and the homeless. Knowing the kindness of the deaconess, offended, forgotten by all people went to her.

The Holy Martyr Tatiana suffered during the persecution of Christians under the infant emperor Alexander Severus (reigned from 222 to 235). Alexander Sever was young, inexperienced, and the state was ruled by his close associates - members of the state council. Among them was one, named Ulpian, who was distinguished by a special hatred of Christians. It was he who compiled a collection of laws directed against believers in Jesus Christ. It was by his decree that the blood of Christian martyrs was shed, as in the first years of persecution. Ulpian sent out an order that all Christians were forced to worship the Roman gods, and in case of disobedience, be tortured and killed.

Tatiana knew how cruelly Christians who refused to worship idols were tortured. They were tortured with whips and hooks, tortured with red-hot iron, and wild lions, brought for this purpose from Africa, were lowered on them. But there was no fear in her heart. She felt like she had already experienced it all. Once in a dream she saw herself surrounded by wild, angry faces. They held out to her instruments of torture, which, touching her, became softer than clay. They tied her hands and feet, but the ropes miraculously untied. Next to her, walls collapsed and statues fell, and in the distance, in a radiant radiance, stood Jesus Christ. "Don't be afraid of anything he said, and if you endure all the torments to the end, you will be with Me.

After some time, Tatyana was seized and brought to the temple of Apollo, where they were forced to sacrifice to a pagan idol. Refusing, Saint Tatiana was subjected to cruel tortures, but the firmness of her faith and patience were unshakable. In the midst of torment, she only prayed that God would enlighten her tormentors. “Lord, do not leave me at this difficult hour! Tatiana pleaded. - Give me the strength to endure and forgive my tormentors, for they do not know what they are doing! And the Lord heard the prayer of the righteous.

When Tatiana was brought to the pagan temple, the earth trembled. And suddenly the statue of Apollo staggered, as if someone invisible had shaken it, fell and shattered to smithereens.

They began to beat Tatiana with whips, but they bounced off her and fell on the executioners themselves.

God! Tatiana pleaded. - Send them the light of truth, so that they may know You, the loving and merciful God!

And suddenly a miracle happened: the tormentors saw four angels surrounding Tatiana, and traces of torment disappeared from her body. These miracles made the tormentors believe in Christ. They fell on their knees in front of the girl.

Forgive us! Forgive me, for it was not of our own free will that we caused you torment! they pleaded.

All eight people were martyred on the same day.

After that, Tatiana was beaten with iron sticks, but each time the tormentors themselves received blows - the angels of God helped the saint.

On the third day, Ulpian ordered Tatiana to sacrifice to the goddess of the hunt, Diana.

On the way to the temple of the goddess Tatiana prayed intensely:

Lord, You know how much I believe in You! How I want the light of truth to enlighten their hearts! Help me, don't leave me!

Suddenly there was a clap of thunder, lightning flashed from behind a cloud and hit the temple. When the smoke cleared, everyone saw that only fragments remained from the temple of Diana ...

Then they took the saint to the judgment seat, hung her up there, and began to torment her with iron hooks. Then they threw her, almost alive, into a dungeon and locked the doors. At night, angels came to the exhausted Tatiana and healed her wounds.

The next morning, Tatiana was taken to the circus - that was the name of the square, surrounded by a row of benches. Here competitions of fighters took place, Christians were also thrown here, on which predatory animals were released. Without ceasing to pray, Tatiana stood in the middle of the arena, waiting for new torments. The cage, which contained predators, was opened and a ferocious lion was released from it. Everyone thought that he would tear the girl apart, but the opposite happened! The lion obediently, like a kitten, lay down beside her and began to lick her feet. When they tried to take the lion back to the cage, he suddenly rushed at one noble dignitary and tore him to pieces.

Tatiana was again tortured and then thrown into the fire, but the flames did not harm her.

The judges, deciding that Tatiana was engaged in sorcery with the help of her hair, cut them off and locked her for two days in the temple of Jupiter. On the third day, the priests, having come to the temple to offer sacrifice to Jupiter, found his statue broken, and Tatiana alive.

The signs of the power and truth of the Lord, revealed in the martyrdom of Saint Tatiana, led many to faith in Christ.

Then the frightened persecutors sentenced her to death. Saint Tatiana was condemned to death by the sword. Together with her, her father was executed, who revealed to her the truths of the faith of Christ. The martyrdom of Tatiana occurred January 12, 226 .

Relics of the Holy Martyr Tatiana

Hand of the Holy Martyr Tatiana

Relics (right hand) the holy martyr Tatiana are kept in Holy Dormition Pskov-Caves Monastery since January 27, 1977. The right hand was handed over to the monastery by Hieromonk Father Vladimir (Moskvitin) - the brother of Archimandrite Athanasius (Moskvitin), who had previously kept these relics. Father Athanasius served in the village of Spasskoye, Klinsky District, Moscow Region, for 22 years, until the day of his death. This shrine was given to Father Athanasius by the pious spouses of an eminent family, his spiritual children, who later both received monastic vows from Father Athanasius. At one time they bought the holy relics for gold currency during the ruin of the Tsarsko-Selsky sovereign's palace, where they were kept. Due to the cruelty of the past years, the shrine was kept secret both by the spouses and by Father Athanasius, but always with due honors and prayerful standing before her.

The icon of the Holy Martyr Tatiana with a particle of relics is in Novospassky monastery(metro station "Proletarskaya", Peasant Square, 10).

Patroness of Students

Since 1755, the martyr Tatiana has traditionally been revered as the patroness of Russian students. It was on the day of her memory that the famous Moscow University was founded. (On January 12, 1755, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed a decree "On the establishment of Moscow University").

Initially, the University did not have a house church, since it itself temporarily occupied the building of the Main Pharmacy. Only in 1791, in one of the outbuildings of the new building of the university, built by Matvey Kazakov, was organized the house Church of the Martyr Tatiana in memory of the founding day of the university. However, during a fire in 1812, the temple burned down along with other buildings.

The new house church of Moscow University was rebuilt in 1833-1836. from the right wing of the Pashkov estate at the corner of Nikitskaya and Mokhovaya streets by the famous architect Evgraf Dmitrievich Tyurin and consecrated on January 12 (January 25), 1837 by Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) in honor of the martyr Tatiana. From about that time, the tradition began to organize student festivities on Tatyana's day, and to honor the saint herself as the patroness of students. On the attic, the inscription flaunts "The light of Christ enlightens all" .

In 1918, the Church of the Martyr Tatiana at Moscow State University was closed. A reading room was arranged in the church premises: bookcases of the Faculty of Law were placed in the church. In 1958, the Student Theater was opened here. Only in 1995 the house church of the Moscow state university re-consecrated and opened. Two particles of relics were brought from the right hand of St. Tatiana, who rests in St. Michael's Cathedral of the Holy Assumption Pskov-Caves Monastery: one particle was inserted into the icon of the holy martyr, and the other was placed in the reliquary.

Troparion, tone 4
Your Lamb, Jesus, Tatiana calls with a great voice: I love you, my bridegroom, and seek you, I suffer and crucify and bury myself for your baptism and suffering for your sake, as if I reign in you and die for you, and I live with you, but like a sacrifice receive me without blemish, with love sacrificed to Thee: by prayers, as if Merciful, save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 4
You shone brightly in your suffering, martyr, you are full of your blood, and like a red dove you flew up to heaven, Tatiano. The same pray for the reverence of thee.

Acquaintance with the saints is not accidental. And most often when we need help. So it is in the case of Saint Tatiana. The icon of the holy martyr Tatyana is in almost every church and, of course, in the female half of humanity, who bear this beautiful name.

Iconography

The image of the holy martyr Tatyana is revered in both Orthodoxy and the Catholic faith. Masters of icon painting on many icons represent her with a laurel branch. Laurel and a wreath from it - the main attribute of Apollo. Symbolically, the image of bay leaves in Tatyana's hand reminds that martyrdom spiritually defeated the pagan gods.

A red cloak is draped over her shoulders. Red is the color of blood, symbolizing martyrdom, the suffering of a saint. The head is covered with a white cape, leaving only the neck and face visible. White color implies the purity and purity of the girl. IN right hand the martyr Tatyana has a cross that speaks of many things.

First of all, the cross symbolizes serving the Lord Jesus Christ, the desire to follow in the footsteps of His teachings and carry one's cross, that is, to be able to endure all the difficulties, sorrows and hardships encountered in earthly life. Another meaning is accepted suffering and death for faith. But the most significant and jubilant symbol is the victory over death, over evil.

Sometimes St. Tatiana is depicted in the arena of the Colosseum with a lion. This is a picture from her earthly life.

Who is Tatyana? And why are our prayers directed to her?

Saint Tatiana

Earthly life of St. Tatiana

Many centuries ago, a girl lived in the city of Rome. Her name was Tatiana. And she was beautiful. Many noble rich young people wooed her. Because she was not only beautiful, but smart and reasonable, and also of a noble family. But Tatiana refused all suitors. And everyone answered the same thing: "My heart is occupied by others." The grooms kept thinking - whom will she choose? The richest, prettiest, or smartest of us? And only Tatyana's father knew why she refused all suitors. He knew that Tatyana had given her girlish heart to the heavenly Bridegroom - Jesus Christ. And I decided never to get married. Both Tatyana and her father were secret Christians.

They lived in a country of paganism, in the Roman Empire, where it was customary to serve different gods. For example, the god of beauty - Apollo or the goddess of hunting - Diana. Christians believed in the one true God, and for this they were persecuted and imprisoned. Therefore, they were forced to gather for worship secretly, at night.

Tatyana spent all her time in prayer and doing housework. Once, hearing the street noise, she went to the window. "Death to the tyrant! Down with Emperor Antony!” shouted the soldiers running towards the imperial palace. And in the evening Tatyana learned that a coup had taken place in the city. The soldiers overthrew Emperor Anthony and enthroned a new one - Alexander Severus, who was only 16 years old. “Now everything will change,” said the father, “now Christians will not be oppressed so much.” "Do you think so?" - asked Tatyana. "Yes, because the new emperor has a Christian mother."

Indeed, from that moment on, life in Rome has changed a bit. Now Christians could more freely practice their faith.

Tatyana, who had long dreamed of serving her neighbors, became a deaconess in the Christian community. So called, women who performed various tasks at the church, prepared women for baptism, visited the sick, helped orphans and the poor. In addition, they must have a good knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and the foundations of the faith. Tatyana was smart and educated, she was not afraid of any menial work. And therefore, she was the best suited for the position of deaconess. Offended, abandoned people turned to her, because they knew about her kindness.

Important. Tatyana's prayers worked wonders: the necessary doctors, medicines, clothes and housing for those in need were found in a timely manner, as if someone's inaccessible hand handed through her the required help. When they expressed gratitude to her, Tatyana constantly answered: “Don’t thank me, but the Lord!”

More about the martyrs for Christ:

Unfortunately, not everyone approved of the freedom that Christians had under Emperor Alexander Severus. One of the emperor's close associates, named Ulpian, was distinguished by particular anger towards Christians. Ulpian sent out a command that all Christians were compelled to worship pagan gods. And in case of disobedience, betray them to torment and execution. But this did not frighten Tatyana. She chose to serve her neighbors and was ready to suffer for them, as her heavenly Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, did. And she continued to go to the community, helping those who needed help.

Holy Martyr Tatiana

In less than a few months, Tatyana was captured. When the girl was brought to court, Ulpian was struck by her beauty. He really wanted this beautiful, noble Roman woman to bow before pagan gods. But Tatyana was adamant. She spoke of Jesus Christ with such love that many of the imperial court converted to Christianity. "She is bewitching them," Ulpian decided. And he ordered Tatyana to cut off her beautiful long braids. He thought that magic power lurked in her hair. A naive person… He did not guess that this power is the love of God. And that She cannot be destroyed, because She is in the heart of man.

Then the tormentors began to beat the holy virgin, gouged out her eyes, cut her body with razors, and in the evenings they threw her all mutilated and bloodied into prison in order to subject her to new torments in the morning. God sent angels to prison, who encouraged and healed Tatyana. So every morning Tatyana appeared in front of her tormentors completely healthy.

And then they threw it into the arena of the Colosseum, so that an angry lion would tear it to pieces for the entertainment of the audience. But instead, the lion began obediently caressing her.

When Tatyana was taken out to be tortured, she prayed for her torturers. And suddenly their eyes were opened, and they saw four angels around the martyr. At the sight of them, eight believed in Christ, for which they were subjected to torment and death.

Then Tatyana was taken to the place of execution along with her father, and both were beheaded with a sword.

So this young girl glorified her name by a feat in the name of Christ. She did not bow her head before pagan idols, she did not betray her Lord.
