February 2 Orthodox calendar. At the great supper

February 2(January 20 according to the "old style" - church Julian calendar). Friday weeks about the publican and the Pharisee(the first of three weeks of preparation for Lent). There is no fast during the entire week, referred to in this regard as "solid". In Russian Orthodox Church today, 12 saints known by name are commemorated. Next, we will briefly talk about them.

Venerable Euthymius the Great. Saint of the 5th century, one of the founders of Palestinian monasticism. The future elder was born in the Roman province of Lesser Armenia around the year 377 from the Nativity of Christ. At the age of twenty-eight, the young father Euthymius, by that time already ordained to the priesthood, went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and, after worshiping its shrines, took upon himself the feat of hermitage. A few years later, a monastic community was formed around Father Euthymius, while the monk himself, although he became the spiritual father of the brethren, continued to live in seclusion, only occasionally leaving it.

The image of Elder Euthymius, mentor of monks and interlocutor of angels, loved in everything Christian world. Russian monks also strove to imitate him, laying a temple in honor of this great saint in one of the northernmost cloisters of Russia - the ancient Kirillo-Belozersky monastery. As the life of St. Euthymius tells:

“In the middle of the 5th century, when Palestinian monasticism sided to a large extent with the Monophysite heretics, the already middle-aged Father Euthymius began to consistently fight for the purity of the Christian dogma. Moreover, it was he who returned Empress Eudokia, who lived in Jerusalem, to Orthodoxy ...”

Saint Euthymius the Great died at a ripe old age in 473 from Christmas. And today, one and a half millennia later, this saint still shows us an example of a strict and ascetic pastor. And at the same time - a healer, miracle worker and wise mentor for all those who have connected their lives with the Church of Christ.

Martyrs Inna, Pinna and Rimma. These holy sufferers for Christ and His Church (it is worth noting that the names belong to men) lived in second halfI- earlyIIcenturies from Christmas. They were originally from Northern Scythia, and therefore, according to legend, they were Slavs (or rather, their ancestors, in modern science called "Proto-Slavs").

Inna, Pinna and Rimma converted to Christianity during the years of preaching in the lands of the future Russia of the saint Apostle Andrew the First-Called becoming his students. Subsequently, these saints enlightened many pagans with the Light of Christ's Truth, for which they were seized and executed by the local prince, who ordered the martyrs to be plunged into an ice hole.

Martyrs Vassus, Eusebius, Eutyches and Basilides. Saints who accepted suffering and martyrdom at the turn of the III- IVcenturies during the period of the most severe anti-Christian persecution of the pagan emperor Diocletian (Diocletian), who reigned in the Roman Empire in 284-305 years from Christmas. The sufferers themselves were courtiers of the wicked emperor.

Witnessing the martyrdom Hieromartyr Theopemtus, Bishop of Nicomedia(whose memory is celebrated on January 18, according to a new style), Saints Vassus, Eusebius, Eutychius and Basilides believed in Christ, accepted Holy Baptism. For this, the sufferers were subjected to the most severe tortures, after which they were brutally killed in 303 from Christmas.

Saints Lawrence, the hermit of the Caves, and Euthymius, the hermit of the Caves. Russian saints who performed spiritual feats in the famous Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in XIII-XIV centuries from Christmas.

Venerable Euthymius of Syanzhemsky, Vologda. Saint of the Russian North, who labored in XVcentury first in the Spaso-Stone Monastery on Lake Kubenskoye, and then moved for the purpose of monastic seclusion to the banks of the Syanzhma River, which is 20 miles from the city of Vologda. Subsequently, Elder Evfimy founded a new monastic monastery in these places. The saint passed away around 1470 from Christmas.

Hieromartyr Pavel Dobromyslov, presbyter. Orthodox priest, who suffered for his faith during the period of Soviet atheistic persecution and received the crown of martyrdom on this day in 1940. Glorified in the many thousands of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church.

Congratulations to Orthodox Christians on the memory of today's saints! By their prayers, Lord, save us and have mercy on us all! Those who, in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism or monastic vows, received names in their honor, are happy to congratulate them on their name day! As they said in Russia in the old days: "Guardian Angels - a golden crown, and you - good health!"

The feast of the Presentation of the Lord, according to its peculiarities of worship, is ranked among the twelfth, but not the Lord's, but the Mother of God holidays. In its construction, the service of the feast is the same as on all the feasts of the Theotokos, but with the difference that, like the service of the Lord's feast, during the liturgy at the small entrance, the entrance verse is pronounced and after it the troparion and kontakion of the feast are sung. At the end of the All-Night Vigil and the Liturgy, there is a special holiday leave.

At the great vespers:

The prokimen of the day is sung and three are read:

Holiday leave: Even in the arms of the righteous Simeon, our willful for the sake of salvation rushes, Christ, our True God, through the prayers of His Most Pure Mother and all the saints, will have mercy and save us, as Good and Humanitarian.

On the liturgies

Input verse: The Lord has spoken His salvation, before the tongues He has revealed His righteousness.

Then - , glory, and now — .

The Trisagion is sung

The second day of the holiday - February 3 - the Church dedicates to the memory of the participants in the event of the Meeting of the Lord - the holy righteous Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess

Rev. Euphemia the Great (473).
and Lawrence the Recluse (XIII-XIV), Caves, in the Far Caves. . . .
Shmch. Pavel Dobromyslov presbyter (1940).

Troparion of Saint Euthymius the Great, tone 4: Rejoice, desert that does not give birth, / be merciful, not sick, / as if a man of spiritual desires multiply your children, / planting piety, / raising virtues to perfection by abstinence. / Through prayers, Christ God, / die our life. Kontakion of Saint Euthymius the Great, tone 8: In your honest Christmas, the creature will find joy / and in your divine memory, reverend, / good-naturedness will welcome many of your miracles, / from below give richly to our souls / and cleanse the sins of filth, / / as if yes, hallelujah.

The Word of God is the presence of God Himself among us by the power of the Holy Spirit. People perceive the Word of God in different ways. Some draw the right conclusions, others do not draw any conclusions at all, and others are bored reading this word. So, in order for the word of God to work, human forces are not enough - the power of the Holy Spirit is needed. And we know that this action of Divine energy, the action of the Holy Spirit takes place in the Church, in the community of believers. When we all stand together around the throne of God and celebrate the Divine Eucharist, partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, then by the power of the Holy Spirit we become participants in the Last Supper, and therefore in everything that God in Christ has done for people. And then the word of God comes to life in our consciousness, fructifies our heart, we begin to understand it correctly, and we have the strength to fulfill it.

EUTHIMUS THE GREAT came from the city of Melitina in Armenia, near the Euphrates River. After the death of his father, his mother, a pious Christian, gave her son to be raised by her brother, presbyter Eudoxius.

For good behavior, he was made a reader; then, having accepted monasticism, he was ordained to the rank of presbyter. In the 30th year of his life, having worshiped the holy places in Jerusalem, he retired to the Faransk Lavra. There, having found a secluded empty hut outside the monastery, he settled in it, earning his living by weaving baskets. Once, together with the Monk Theoctist, who lived nearby, they withdrew to the Kutali desert (not far from Jericho) and, having chosen a difficult place in the mountains, settled in a cave. But soon the shepherds, driving the flocks, found their cave and told the story in the village. People began to flock to the hermits; gradually a monastic community arose. For his ascetic life and firm confession of the Orthodox faith, Saint Euthymius received the title of the Great. He had the gift of clairvoyance, saw the inner movements of the spirit and recognized human thoughts. Euthymius died in 473 at the age of 97. Look like this - everything is also a convenient calendar, where they are distributed by months. It's good to see what religious holiday February is waiting for you.
