Solar eclipse

Definition 1

A solar eclipse is the name given to an event during which the Moon completely or partially covers the Sun in the earth's sky.

It is noted that a solar eclipse is possible only during the new moon. This feature is due to the fact that at this time the side of the Moon facing our planet is not illuminated, and as a result, the Moon is not visible.

The next condition for a solar eclipse is that the new moon occurs while the luminaries are close to one of the two lunar nodes.

In this case, the lunar nodes are understood as the points at which the visible orbits of the Moon and the Sun intersect.

A solar eclipse begins in the western part of the sky at sunrise, and ends in the eastern part at sunset.

Total solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse is the phenomenon when the Moon is completely obscured by the Sun. Note that in the case of such an eclipse, it is possible to observe such a phenomenon as the solar corona. In terms of time, a total solar eclipse does not last long, only a couple of minutes.

It is worth saying that the longest solar eclipse will occur at the end of the twenty-second century, or more precisely on July 16, 2186. And it will last a full 7 minutes and 29 seconds.

Annular solar eclipse.

Such an eclipse is possible when the following conditions are met. In this case, the angular diameter of the Moon's disk (about 0.5°) becomes slightly smaller than the angular diameter of the Sun's disk (about 0.5°).

As a result, during the maximum phase of the eclipse, people can see that only a ring, bright and narrow, remains of the Sun.

Partial solar eclipse.

This is the name of the phenomenon as a result of which our Sun is not completely hidden behind the earth’s satellite the Moon. This occurs due to the fact that the centers of the Moon and the Sun do not coincide in the sky.

Periodicity of solar eclipses.

Statistics and observations indicate that solar eclipses occur two to five times a year. But if we take the average number of solar eclipses per century, we get 237 such phenomena. This number includes 160 partial solar eclipses, as well as 63 total and 14 annular eclipses.

Note that solar eclipses in a large phase, at any particular point on Earth, occur very rarely.

Thus, according to observations and calculations, 159 solar eclipses could be seen in Moscow from the eleventh to the eighteenth centuries. However, only three of them were complete. But at the same time, there are exceptions. Thus, in the region of Gorno-Altaisk in the period from 1952 to 2008, it was possible to see three total eclipses of the Sun at once.

Eclipses in historical documents.

Analysis of eclipses also helps historians conduct research. Using records of eclipses in the past from various sources, we can compare these data with astronomical knowledge and build a clearer chronological series of events in the past.

It should be said that in the distant past there was no linear chronology familiar to us. We calculate chronology from a specific starting point. Thus, in European Christian culture, the birth of Christ became such a starting point; in Muslim culture, the exodus of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca. Before this, the most common system of reference was where chronology was based on the reign of the next emperor, king or pharaoh. And such fragmentary dates make it difficult to compile a single chronological grid in the distant past. Reconciliation of calculated and chronicle data about astronomical phenomena in a given period helps researchers clarify the date of a certain event in the distant past.

Phenomena during solar eclipses

Shadow waves or running shadows- this is the name of a special optical and atmospheric phenomenon. It can occur before the beginning of the total solar eclipse phase or after the completion of the total phase of this eclipse.

Such phenomena occur when the Sun’s crescent illuminates the Earth’s atmosphere in a small fraction of time, or rather one or two minutes before the start and after the end of the solar eclipse phase.

Bailey's rosary

This is a phenomenon during which a sequence of bright spots appears that run along the so-called lunar limb.

Limb is the name of the observable and visible edge of the disk of the Moon, Sun or any planet.

Bailey's rosary can appear at the beginning or at the end of the maximum phase of a solar eclipse. This astronomical phenomenon can be seen quite well through a telescope or binoculars. And this astronomical effect received its name in honor of an astronomer from Great Britain who described it back in 1836.

Diamond ring

This name hides an optical phenomenon when a ring with luminous diamonds appears in the sky. This phenomenon occurs a second before the start of the total phase of a solar eclipse or a second after the end of the total phase. The reason for it is the sun's rays that pass the edges of the lunar valleys, which is why such a diamond ring appears.

The influence of a solar eclipse.

A solar eclipse is a fairly brief phenomenon, and therefore cannot negatively affect living organisms on Earth, including humans. Yes, animals may worry, a person may experience an unconscious feeling of anxiety, birds may go to sleep, but these changes are reversible and do not pose any threat.

Moon eclipse

A lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon in which our satellite the Moon, moving in orbit, passes through the cone of the shadow cast by our Earth.

The Moon may be completely covered by the Earth's shadow. This is possible since the diameter of the earth's shadow is, according to calculations, about 2.6 times the diameter of our satellite.

Total lunar eclipse

Such an eclipse occurs when the Moon completely enters the shadow cast by our planet during this phenomenon. A total lunar eclipse has a maximum duration of one hundred and eight minutes. A lunar eclipse can be observed from any point on the surface of the Earth's hemisphere that faces the Moon. This is the main difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse.

Partial lunar eclipse

Such an eclipse occurs when the moon only partially enters the shadow of our planet. In this case, the part of the Moon on which the Earth's shadow falls becomes dark.

Penumbral lunar eclipse

Penumbra is the name given to the region of outer space in which our planet can only partially obscure the Sun.

And if our natural satellite passes through such a penumbra, and does not enter the shadow, then a penumbral eclipse occurs. As a result, there is a slight decrease in the brightness of the Moon. Such a decrease can only be noticed when using devices.

Only if the Moon passes in a penumbral eclipse near the cone of total shadow does it become possible to notice a slight darkening at one edge of the Moon.

A total penumbral eclipse occurs when the moon completely enters the penumbral region, but does not fall into the shadow. Such eclipses occur quite rarely, which makes them different from partial eclipses.

A partial penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when only part of the satellite penetrates the penumbra.
