Pagan gods Perun. Slavic god Perun

God (Perkunas, Perkon, Perk, Purusha) - the Patron God of all warriors and many Clans of the Great Race, the defender of the Lands and Clans of Svyatorus (Russians, Belarusians, Estonians, Litas, Lats, Latgals, Zemgals, Glades, Serbs, etc.) from the Dark forces, God the Thunderer, who controls Lightning, the son of God Svarog and Lada the Mother of God, the grandson of God Vyshen. Dark forces come from different Halls of the Hellish World in order to deceive, flatter and cunning to lure people from the Clans of the Great Race to their place, and if this does not help, then they kidnap people in order to turn them all into obedient slaves in their dark World and not give opportunities to develop spiritually and advance along the Golden Path, as established by God Svarog.
Dark forces penetrate not only to Midgard-Earth, but also to other Light Earths in Svarga the Most Pure. And then there is a battle between the forces of Light and Darkness.
Perun, already once, freed our Ancestors from the Hell captivity and filled up the Gates of the Interworld, leading to Hell, on Midgard-Earth with the Caucasus Mountains.
These battles of Light and Darkness took place at certain intervals: "... after the expiration of the Svarog Circle and Ninety-Nine Circles of Life", i.e. after 40176 years.
After the first three Heavenly Battles between Light and Darkness, when the Light Forces won, God Perun descended to Midgard-Earth to tell people about the events that had taken place and what awaits the Earth in the future, about the onset of dark times and the upcoming Great Asses, t .e. Heavenly Battles.
Fluctuations in time between the Third and the upcoming decisive Fourth Battle of Light and Darkness can be, in addition to the time mentioned by Perun, only one Circle of Life, i.e. 144 Years.
There are also Traditions that God Perun visited Midgard-Earth several more times in order to tell the Hidden Wisdom to the Priests and Elders of the Clans of the Holy Race, how to prepare for the dark, hard times when the Sleeve of our swastika galaxy will pass through the spaces subject to the forces from the Dark Worlds of Hell.

The dark forces that secretly penetrated Midgard-Earth create all kinds of false religious Cults and specifically try to destroy or denigrate the Cult of God Perun, erase it from the memory of peoples, so that by the time of the Fourth, decisive battle between Light and Darkness, when Perun arrives on Midgard-Earth , people did not know who He was and for what purpose He came.
In our time, a large number of “true” prophecies about the End of the World or the End of Times have appeared, especially in Lunar Cults, about the coming to Midgard-Earth of the Supreme God the Savior. Followers of one world religion call him Christ, and other religions call him the Messiah, Mosheach, Buddha, Matreya, etc.
All this is done so that during the coming of Perun to Earth, white people do not recognize in Him their Supreme God and reject His help, and thereby doom themselves to complete humiliation and death.

Perunov Day - Thursday coinciding with the day of Veles the Pure, which is why our ancestors said that "Perun drives away demons and washes the body". Perunov Day is also the "Day of Changes", so if you decide to change something in your life, then it is best to make such decisions on Thursday. However, it should be remembered - new cases are accepted only on the rising moon.
Perun's weapons - lightning, hammer (axe), a short Slavic sword, as well as a bow with a quiver full of fire and stone arrows.
Hidden Animals - bay horses, cheetah, wolves and wild boar.
Hidden Birds - rooster and eagle.
Perunovy plants - oak, peas, oats, ferns and mushrooms.
Perunov figure - "4".
Perunov's requirements - cereals (especially pearl barley), cakes, pies, apples, peas and other legumes. He loves Perun and the sounds of drums, trumpets, the rattling of weapons, the roar of cannonades and the peals of bells that inspire horror in the enemy.
Perunov planet of the solar system - patronizing the Earth Jupiter (YuPater). With its favorable influence, large harvests, a rapid increase in livestock weight gain, good development of fruit seedlings, etc. are noted. Between Jupiter and its nearest satellite Io, electrical discharges-lightnings periodically occur. The energy of one such lightning is many times greater than the power of all modern power plants. Modern astrophysicists have established that these discharges generate electromagnetic radiation that favorably affects the Earth's atmosphere.
Perun - Patron God Hall of the Eagle in Svarog Circle.

Amulet of the Hall of the Eagle in the Svarog Circle

Perun, as part of the Universe

- SKY
Perun is God-Sky, and therefore the entire sky, precipitation, winds and weather are in his power. Combining with Earth-Terra, he thereby becomes the Father of earthly Nature, and then the Slavic-Aryans.
Perun is the formidable God of retribution for non-compliance with the Canons established by the Gods. He is the patron of honest, just, courageous and noble people who uphold the Truth and preserve the Native Faith. In particular, Perun favors warriors and princes. His winged Valkyrie daughter Magura meets the souls of the soldiers who fell in battles and escorts them to the Light World of Navi - Slav. That is why it was so important for the warriors not to die in bed, but to fall in battle with weapons in their hands and immediately go to the World of Glory.
The symbol of Kolo Perun is an oblique feather cross, and the general symbol is an oblique linear cross. The oblique cross is sometimes presented in the form of a four-beam star, which inherited a symbolic meaning from the cross, but of a lower order. Basically, it is read as the "Star" of the Righteous Path.
In some Slavic communities three-, six- or eight-pointed stars are also used as the Perun Star.

Perun as an existing (embodied) deity

At times, Perun turns into a wolf to help a person or punish him, therefore, in many Russian lands, the wolf is a sacred animal of the Russians and a protective totem of some genera. In folk legends, the wolf is also the personification of a dark cloud that stores the living water of rain. The concept of strength, health and beauty is inextricably linked with it.
The Slavs also have a legend about how Perun was born on Earth:

Perun's parents were Svarog and Lada. The birth of Perun was marked by a powerful earthquake. “... Then thunders rumbled in the sky, Lightning flashed then in clouds, And the Son of Svarog Perun the Thunderer was born like lightning.”
Before the baby had grown up, he was kidnapped by the Skipper-beast (that is, half-man-half-scorpion. It is described in detail in the ancient Sumerian-Babylonian poem about Gilgamesh. Skipper guarded the entrance to the other world).
The monster took with him the sisters of Perun - the goddesses Zhiva, Marena and Lelya. Skipper plunged Perun into an eternal sleep, and turned the goddesses into hairy monsters.
Lada, in grief, called her eldest sons and ordered them to immediately go in search of Perun and sisters. They turned into prophetic birds - Sirina, Alkonost and Stratima, flew around the wide world.
Everyone flew around, did not find a trace of the baby Perun. They just noticed the Skipper Beast sitting at the entrance to the dungeon. He, at the sight of Svarozhich, immediately disappeared. The brothers understood where to look for the loss, and descended into the dungeon.
For a long time they made their way along the gloomy passages and finally saw Perun sleeping in a sound sleep. Over the past years, he grew up, became a man, but only he could not be awakened from dead oblivion.
Then the Svarozhichi sent the bird Gamayun to the Repey mountains for the holy surya - living water. They washed my brother with it, and he got up alive and healthy.
As Perun came to his senses, he said that he would take revenge on the Skipper-beast and would definitely find his sisters.
He overcame many obstacles in the dark kingdom of Navi, faced many horrors, but still found Zhiva, Marena and Lelya, turned into monsters by the Skipper. Perun disenchanted the sisters and went to the Skipper's palace, which was made of human bones.
They gripped tightly and fought for a long time. Finally, Perun lifted the enemy and threw him to the ground. Mother Earth parted and swallowed Skipper forever.

During his Third visit to Midgard-Earth, about 40,000 years ago, Perun told people from various Clans of the Great Race and the descendants of the Heavenly Clan in Asgard of Iriysk the Sacred Wisdom about the future, which the Priests of Belovodye wrote down with Kh'Aryan Runes and preserved for descendants in the Nine Circles " Santii of the Vedas of Perun" (in nine "Books of the Wisdom of God Perun").

Perun(other Russian Perun, Belorussian Pyarun) - the God of Thunder in Slavic mythology, patron of the prince and squad in the ancient Russian pagan pantheon. After the spread of Christianity in Rus', many elements of the image of Perun were transferred to the image of Elijah the Prophet (Ilya Gromovnik). The name of Perun tops the list of gods of the pantheon of Prince Vladimir in The Tale of Bygone Years.

The Slavic etymology of the name Perun (Proto-Slavic *Perunъ) is quite obvious. It comes from the verb *perti, *pür? “hit, beat” (cf. Russian shove, Bulgarian pen, change “I beat, beat”) and the doer suffix -unъ (cf. runner, jumper, etc.). Thus, the name Perun means "beating, striking, smashing (with thunder and lightning)". This etymology is also supported by the fact that in the Slavic languages there are identical words for thunder and lightning - Rus. perun "lightning", Ukrainian Perun, Belarusian Piarun, Polish piorun "thunder".

The cult of the Thunderer among the Slavs was also reported by Procopius of Caesarea (VI century - Byzantine writer; secretary of the commander Belisarius):

"... They believe that one of the gods, the creator of lightning, is the master of all, and bulls are sacrificed to him and other sacred rites are performed."

From this it is concluded that the Thunderer-Perun was already then the head of the Slavic pantheon. The fact that bulls were sacrificed to Perun is confirmed by later ethnographic data: bulls and other cattle were also slaughtered on Ilyin's day in honor of Elijah the Prophet (who replaced Perun as the Thunderer).

The apocryphal "Conversation of the Three Hierarchs" calls Perun, along with, the angel of thunder and lightning, which once again confirms his essence as a thunderer.

The first information about Perun with the mention of his name appears in The Tale of Bygone Years. In particular, oaths by Perun are contained in the treaties of Rus' with the Byzantines, concluded after the campaigns in 907, 945 and 971.

Here is a fragment of the treaty of 945:

"And if anyone from the Russian side thinks to destroy such love ... then let the unbaptized receive no help from either God or Perun, let them not defend themselves with their shields, and let them die from their swords, from arrows and from their other weapons, and yes will be slaves in this life and in the afterlife."

The following describes how, at the conclusion of the treaty, pagan Rus swear, putting down their shields, naked swords, hoops and other weapons. Later, Prince Igor was sworn in by the Greek ambassadors - he came with his pagan people to the hill where Perun stood, and they laid down their weapons, shields and gold, and swore allegiance.

From the treaty of 971 we learn the following:

"And if we do not fulfill the above ... let us be cursed by God, in whom we believe, by Perun and Volos, the cattle god, let us be yellow as gold, and let us be cut with our weapons."

Generally speaking, the appearance of Perun in oaths is not surprising: for the Varangians-Rus, he really was “their god”, the patron of the prince and squad. It is likely that the purely Slavic god Perun replaced for them the Scandinavian Thor, also the Thunderer.

Perun is mentioned in the annalistic story about the so-called "pagan reform" of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich, when he installed idols of six most important deities in Kyiv:

Thus, in the center of Kyiv, not far from the residence of the prince, a wooden anthropomorphic idol of Perun with a silver head and a golden mustache was installed on a hill. Perun is mentioned in the first place in this list, so we can assume that he became the head of the all-Russian pagan pantheon established by Vladimir. Moreover, some researchers believe that initially only Perun was mentioned in the annals, and the names of the other deities are a later insertion (hence, only one idol, Perun, was installed on a hill in Kiev). Be that as it may, the goal of the reform was indeed to establish a nationwide cult of the supreme deity. And it is no coincidence that this deity patronized the prince and squad - in the young emerging Old Russian state, the prince and squad urgently needed to strengthen their positions. As part of the same pagan reform, the idol of Perun was also installed in Novgorod by Vladimir’s uncle, Dobrynya: “and when Dobrynya came to Novgorod, put Perun as an idol over the Volkhov River, and eat the people of Novgorod as God for him.”

The "pagan reform" of Vladimir did not bring the expected results, and the baptism of Rus' became an urgent need. In this regard, both in Kyiv and Novgorod, the idols of Perun were overthrown and "expelled". In Novgorod it happened like this:

"In the year 6497 (989). Vladimir and the whole Russian land were baptized. And he appointed a metropolitan in Kiev, and an archbishop in Novgorod ... And archbishop Akim Korsunyanin came to Novgorod, and destroyed the temples, the idol of Perun was planted and ordered him to be dragged to Volkhov. They tied him ropes, and dragged through the mud, beating him with sticks. And commanded no one anywhere to take him."

In folklore

Certain information about Perun can also be gleaned from folklore. Slavic peoples. In the calendar ritual tradition of the folklore of the southern Slavs, there is such a character as Peperuda (Dodola), which is directly associated with Perun. The girl who personified Peperuda participated in the summer rituals for calling rain. She is also mentioned in ritual songs performed on this occasion. In folklore Eastern Slavs Peperuda's name has been forgotten, however, in children's calls about rain, there is an image of an “orphan” identical with her, capable of causing rain by opening the gate with a key (a similar plot is also found in Dodol songs).

Interesting data about Perun are also found in East Slavic folklore. In particular, in Belarusian fairy tales there is a story about the pursuit of the devil by the Thunderer. Perun (or his “deputy”) tries to kill the devil with lightning, and he hides in turn in a person, animals, tree, stone, and finally goes into the water (“there is a place for you,” says Perun). This plot reflects the ideas of the Eastern Slavs that evil spirits live in water for most of the year, and on land they arrive only from Ivan Kupala to Ilyin's day. That is why swimming in natural reservoirs is allowed only during this period, and that is why there are so many thunderstorms at this time - it is Perun / Elijah the Prophet who shoots evil spirits walking on land with lightning. On Ilyin's day, evil spirits return to the rivers, making them dangerous for swimming.

Among the southern and eastern Slavs, everywhere in folklore and mythological representations, Perun was replaced by Christian saints or the image of God. The military traits of Perun largely passed on to George the Victorious and partly to Boris and Gleb. In the popular mind, the image of Perun was very completely and organically replaced by Ilya the prophet. This was also facilitated by certain features of this saint, which make him related to the image of the Thunderer - for example, the chariot as a vehicle, connection with heaven and fire.

Attributes of Perun

Perun is believed to be associated with hills - for example, his idols, according to the chronicles, stood on the hills. There are also linguistic reasons for such a link, which, however, should be treated carefully, since they may be a later convergence of two completely different roots in consonance.

One of the most important attributes of Perun was an oak. Interestingly, the Indo-European name for oak, *perku-, has not been preserved in the Slavic languages. It was tabooed, which once again confirms the sacredness of the oak for the Slavs.

Konstantin Porphyrogenitus (middle of the 10th century) left a description of an oak-related ritual performed on the island of Khortytsya. In this case, we are talking not so much about the Slavs, but about the "Rus" - the Scandinavians who adopted Slavic customs:

"On this island they make their sacrifices, since there is a huge oak tree: they sacrifice living roosters, they strengthen and arrows around [the oak], and others - pieces of bread, meat and what everyone has, as their custom dictates."

The southern Slavs know the worship of Elijah the prophet on the hills with oak forests.

In the letter of the Galician prince Lev Danilovich of 1302, which defines the boundaries of the possessions of the bishop of Przemysl, Perunov Oak is mentioned as one of the borders: “... and from that mountain to Perunov Oak mountains? slope.

Archaeological data also testify to the cult of oaks. B. A. Rybakov (Soviet archaeologist and historian) writes:

"Twice science has been enriched with finds of genuine sacred oaks of pagan times. The first find was made in 1909. At 8 km from the mouth of the Desna near the Nikolsky Monastery, an oak trunk about 20 m long was extracted from the water. The oak died relatively young - judging by the growth rings, it was about 150 years old.At one time, four boar jaws, located in a square, were cut into the thickness of the trunk and managed to grow into the wood. The jaws belonged to young boars. The second similar find of an oak trunk with boar tusks was made in 1975, not far from the first in the Dnieper , below the mouth of the Desna. At a height of 6 m from the roots, 9 boar jaws were also implanted into the trunk of an oak tree, forming a figure of a square with a side of 34 cm. "

Of the flowers, Perun apparently owned the iris. This conclusion is made on the basis that the South Slavic peoples call the Germanic iris Perunika, along with bogisha "God's flower".

Perun's weapons were a club, an ax, stones and "thunder arrows". The Slavs believed that fossil belemnite mollusks, flint axes, arrowheads and spears were Perun's "thunder arrows" that went into the ground when lightning struck and eventually came to the surface. These artifacts were given magical properties For example, they could heal diseases. These ideas about "thunder arrows" were preserved among the people until recently. The chronicle mentions the club as an artibut of the idol of Perun and fights in his honor in Novgorod.

An ax was also considered an important attribute of Perun. Numerous “hatchet” amulets, found by archaeologists in ancient Russian lands and associated with the squad environment, are associated with this fact (after all, Perun is the patron of the prince and the squad). It is believed that amulets - "hatchets" were issued to the youths during the tonsure, and at first they wore them as amulets, and as they entered the squad - as a prestigious symbol of belonging to it.

For an earlier time, the “hammer” amulets are more characteristic, which are an archaeological marker of the Varangians-Rus, who have not yet left Scandinavian customs.

Of the days of the week, Thursday was undoubtedly dedicated to Perun. This is evidenced, firstly, by the Indo-European tradition, which connects this day of the week with the God of Thunder (cf. German Donnerstag "Donar's day", English Thursday "day", etc.). Further, this is supported by the name of Thursday among the Polabs - Peräunedån "Perun's day" (although it is likely that this name may be a tracing-paper from Donnerstag). Among the Eastern Slavs, the Thursday before this holiday was considered equal in importance to Elijah's day. Thursday in the Slavic tradition was considered a “male” day and a good one for undertakings. Finally, it is precisely about the connection of the Thunderer with Thursday that the Russian proverb “after the rain on Thursday” speaks, which refers to the fulfillment of a wish (skepticism of it, apparently, of late origin).

PERUN - the God of Thunder, who occupied the pantheon of gods pagan Rus', but for a very short time, a place similar to that which the ancient Greeks assigned to Zeus, and since this literally refers to the eve of the introduction of Christianity in Rus', the name of Perun is known more than the names of other gods. During this period of time, especially in the princely environment, he was given the main place and the main role among all recognized gods. But we should not forget that the transformation of Perun into the ruler of the world takes place (his image was known, of course, much earlier and, according to some researchers of Slavic mythology, was probably borrowed from Scandinavia) almost simultaneously with the formation of the Kievan state.

Perun- god of thunder, lightning and rain. All elements of nature are subject to him. He commands all. He has a huge retinue of minions who do his will. Thunder and Lightning, Rain and Hail, Winds and Storms, including the Nightingale the Robber, frost-calinniki Treskunets, Studenets, Karachun, heroes Dubynya, Duginya, Lesinya, Valigora, Elinya, Usynya, Svyatogor, etc. etc. , snakes, water, goblin - all these are Perun's helpers. Both Yav and Nav are subject to him - and the ruler of the underworld Viy, and therefore all his evil spirits, serve Perun. Rivers considered sacred were dedicated to him; groves, oak forests and entire forests were dedicated to him, the felling of trees in which was prohibited under pain of death.

Perun- a cruel, frightening god. Bloody sacrifices were made to him, including human ones. Not by chance, but as a means of intimidating and subjugating the people, the cult of Perun finds a response and spread primarily in the princely environment. Already initially, when he was not yet elevated to the rank of the highest deity, according to B. Rybakov, Perun "Obviously, he was not so much the god of fertilizing clouds, but rather Perun the Thunderstorm, the formidable deity of the first tribal squads, equestrian shepherd warriors armed with battle axes, which for a long time became a symbol of the thunder god", and with the beginning of the formation of the state, it becomes a symbol of princely squads, a symbol of power - a princely thunderstorm.

The gods are great; but terrible Perun;

The great foot is terrifying,

As he preceded his lightning

Cloaked in darkness, wrapped in whirlwinds,

Terrible clouds are leading.

Steps on a cloud - lights from under the heels;

Rizoy will wave - the firmament will turn purple;

He looks at the earth - the earth trembles;

He looks at the sea - boils like a cauldron.

The mountains lean like a blade of grass before him.

The official introduction of the cult of Perun as the supreme deity takes place shortly before the introduction of Christianity. His temples were established and the idols of Perun were installed only in 980 by Prince Vladimir. In front of the temple of Perun, an eternal fire burned, the continuous maintenance of which was the responsibility of the priests. For negligent performance of this duty, the guilty person was threatened with the death penalty in the form of burning at the stake.

The proud temple of Perun was built high,

He spread shadows far over the mountains:

Before him always burns an inextinguishable flame,

At the entrance, the cornerstone is approved,

And named the stone of death by the people;

He is drenched in black blood everywhere;

On it, that unfortunate victim trembled,

The ferocity of the priests that nourished:

There are deadly weapons hanging,

Vessels are filled with blood.

"Vladimirada"

This deity was clearly a lover of bloody sacrifices. So, even in order to prevent the death of the crop from thunderstorms, which Perun disposed of, on July 20 (old style) "meat" sacrifices were made to him.

The body of the idol of Perun was carved from wood, the head was cast from silver, the ears, mustache and beard were made of gold, the legs were forged from iron, in his hand he held an image of lightning made of precious stones.

This gloomy temple contained a terrible idol,

He wears a golden crown, crimson porphyry;

He held peruns twisted in his hand,

With which he threatened to strike in anger;

Golden on his forehead had huge horns,

Silver chest, had iron legs;

His high throne burned with rubies,

And he was called the god of all gods.

Herald of the terrible for man:

It strikes with thunderbolts, it shines with lightning,

Murder is on the forehead, death is on the eyes.

His crown is a snake, his clothes are fear.

"Vladimirada"

The introduction of Christianity in Rus' in 988 required the elimination of the worship of all pagan gods. According to the order of Prince Vladimir, all idols were to be destroyed. And they chopped and burned. (Is it any wonder that in Rus' periodically destroyed, and are being destroyed now, monuments of the past, including church ones. Namely Orthodox Church introduced this custom.

With the idols of Perun, they acted somewhat differently. In Kyiv, he was tied to horses and dragged through the city, accompanied by an escort of twelve combatants, to the Dnieper, thrown into the water and floated over the Dnieper rapids. Likewise with an idol. Perun was also treated in Veliky Novgorod, sending him on a voyage along the Volkhov: the river was considered the road to the other world, where Perun was sent.

Using the example of the introduction of the cult of Perun as the supreme deity, one can see how the form of religion changes under the influence of socio-political conditions, under the influence of the needs of the emerging state, how its social role changes, how religion is put at the service of those in power.

The lord sits on the throne of thunders,

In his hand is a wild whirlwind,

He threw lightning into the abyss of shafts,

And the sea hit the rocks

And the waves of his song from the beginning of time

The Great did not stop.

The Lord descends to earth in thunders,

And the heart of nature trembled:

The caves in the bottomless mountains howled,

Ether vaults collapsed,

The universe is wrapped in swirling dust,

And the nations fell silent in horror.

A. N. Muravyov

In a less pronounced form, such processes are the processes of the formation of religion at the service of the dominant social groups, - are also observed in modern Russia.
Perun is one of the most important Gods of the Slavs. Thunder god, patron of warriors. The Russian ambassadors swore in the name of Perun and Veles when concluding an agreement with the Greeks in 911, which indicates his high status in divine pantheon Slavs. The names of these two Gods were sworn by Igor's warriors. They are also mentioned in the treaty of Svyatoslav in 971. Perun patronized the prince and the princely squad - this is clearly seen in the history of a thousand years ago. Perun, as the God of thunder and lightning, meant inhuman strength and power. In the pantheon of Prince Vladimir, Perun was the main among all the other Gods, and the Tale of Bygone Years clearly narrates this: “And Vladimir began to reign in Kiev alone, and set up idols on a hill outside the terem courtyard: a wooden Perun with a silver head and golden mustache, Khorsa (and) Dazhbog, Stribog, Simargl and Mokosh. The idol of Perun in the center of Kyiv looked majestic: his head was silver, and his mustache was golden. The idol of Perun was also installed in Novgorod: “and Dobrynya came to Novgorod, put Perun as an idol over the Volkhov River, and feed him the people of Novgorod like God.”

In honor of Perun, eternal fires were lit on temples. Eternal bonfires, which never went out, were made of oak logs - a tree that directly refers to Perun. Living fire was extracted from oak. Oak groves and forests also belonged to this God and were carefully guarded as sacred. When there was no rain for a long time, in such groves they called on Perun to send down to people his fat herds (clouds) that would give the earth water to drink, and with their arrows (lightning bolts) they would defeat the enemy and evil spirit. Constantine Porphyrogenitus in the 10th century even left a description of the ritual associated with oak, which he saw on the island of Khortytsia: “On this island they make their sacrifices, as there is a huge oak tree: they sacrifice live roosters, they strengthen and arrows around [the oak], and others - pieces of bread, meat and what everyone has, as their custom dictates.” Archeology has twice found the sacred Oak tree with artifacts stating that these finds were revered by our ancestors on a par with churs and idols. So in 1909, near the mouth of the Desna, a 150-year-old oak was extracted from the water. It is noteworthy that at a relatively young age, four boar jaws, which were arranged in a square, were cut into the tree trunk and managed to grow into it. In 1975, a second tree was found not far from the first find, only now 9 boar jaws turned out to be ingrown at a height of about 6 meters, and the bottom of the trunk bore traces of fire. Both finds date back to the 8th century AD. In one of the Ukrainian carols, it is sung that two oaks stood in the primeval ocean even before the creation of the world. One of the Russian fairy tales says that the oak grows up to the sky. In the Serbian-Bulgarian apocrypha of the 15th century it is said that the whole world rests on the iron oak:. All this tells us that the oak, as a symbol of Perun, was very revered among the Slavic tribes and had both sacred and divine appearance.

We have received information about the holidays of Perun, in which sacrifices were made either in the form of a bull or a rooster. Judging by some source, the rooster must be red. During the study of the temple-altar of 980 in Kyiv, in which those same unquenchable fires from oak firewood burned, a large number of bones were found, which mainly belonged to bulls. The bones of pigs and birds were also found in the altar. In addition, along with the bones, ceramics and a military iron ax, the symbol of Perun, were found. An analogue of this temple-altar-sanctuary was also in Novgorod, in Peryn.
It is known that Perun, under different variants of names, existed in the traditions of different tribes and peoples. For example, in Lithuania he was called Perkunas, in Belarus - Pyarun, in India - Parjánya, also in India Indra was considered the God of thunder, thunder and lightning. In Scandinavia this God was called Thor, the Celts called him Tarinis. Western Slavs called Perun - Prove. This is how Helmold describes the cult of Prove: “Here, among very old trees, we saw sacred oaks dedicated to the god of this land, Prove. They were surrounded by a courtyard, surrounded by a wooden, skillfully made fence, which had two gates. All the cities abounded with penates and idols, but this place was sacred to all the earth. There was a priest, and their own festivities, and various rituals of sacrifice. Here, every second day of the week, all the people used to gather with the prince or priest for court. Entrance to the courtyard was allowed only to the priest and those wishing to make a sacrifice or those who were in mortal danger, for such people were never denied shelter here.

From the fact that historical sources report his name as Prove, the opinions of researchers differ. Some say that it is simply distorted - Perun, others argue that in this way the God of the Storm could also be the God of Law, it was not for nothing that judgments were made in the place of his worship.

During baptism, images pagan gods, were transferred to the images of Christian saints. This fate did not spare Perun either. In a sense, people renamed their God and the image of Perun was transferred to Ilya the Prophet, who is also called Ilya Gromovnik.

The word Perun in one meaning or another is found many times even in such an ancient scripture as the Mahabharata, for example: “You are a cloud, you are Vayu, you are a fire that comes from lightning in the sky. You are the chaser of crowds of clouds, it is you who are called Punarghana, you are the terrible and incomparable Perun, you are a thundering cloud! Precisely, you are the creator of the worlds and their destroyer, O invincible!” or: “Once a thunderbolt was created for the mighty Indra to kill Vritra, it shattered into tens and hundreds of pieces in the head of Vritra. And the breakaway part of Perun is revered by the Gods. Every tool that exists in the world is considered the body of Perun. A Brahmin has such a particle of perun in his hand, the Kshatriyas have it in their chariot, the Vaishyas own it in the form of their bounties, and the Shudras have it in their duties. The horses of the Kshatriyas are also a particle of perun, therefore their horses are considered inviolable.

Historians and linguists have found out quite accurately that the name Perun comes from the ancient Slavic word perti or shove, which meant to hit, beat. Although here a question arises, to which there is no unequivocal answer - the name came from the verb or vice versa. Thus, Perun means - smashing, beating. The word "Perun" in ancient Rus' was also called simply lightning and thunder. The ancestors believed that Perun drives the heavenly herds (clouds) to graze on the heavenly fields, hums loudly into the trumpet, throws lightning to the ground. Clouds and clouds were called - "Perun trees", on which lightning birds sit.

The mention of Perun in ancient sources is very common. In particular, some of them clearly state that the Thunderer was revered, sacrificed to him: "... They believe that one of the gods, the creator of lightning, is the master of all, and bulls are sacrificed to him and other sacred rites are performed" . In the writing "Conversation of the Three Hierarchs" Perun is called the angel of thunder and lightning. However, the first mention refers to the same Tale of Bygone Years, which refers to the oath of Russia with the Byzantines: “And if anyone from the Russian side thinks to destroy such love ... then the unbaptized will not receive help from either God or Perun, but they will not protect themselves with shields their own, and may they perish by their swords, by arrows, and by their other weapons, and may they be slaves in this life and in the afterlife. After that, the oath took place on a hill (this is very typical for the temples of Perun, which were located on a hill), near the idol of Perun, where Prince Igor, along with warriors, laid down their weapons, shields and gold. During the oath in front of the idol, it was said: “And if we don’t do the above, let us be cursed by the God in whom we believe, Perun and Volos, the cattle god, let us be yellow like gold, and let us be cut with our weapons.”

Slavic God Thunderer Perun

Lightnings that strike from the sky and cause thunder, split trees and even sometimes fall into living beings - animals and people, in the view of the Slavs - Perun's arrows or an ax that he throws into the hiding evil spirits. It is for this reason that after a rain with thunder it smells so fresh and light on the soul. One of the Belarusian fairy tales tells how the Thunderer pursues the devil, trying to hit him with lightning, the devil hides either in a person, or in animals, or in a tree, or in a stone, and, finally, hides in the water. There is a belief associated with this. Evil spirits hide in the water most of the time and come out on the ground from Kupala to Perunov day (Ilyin). Therefore, you can swim only during this period, when all the evil spirits came out of the rivers and lakes. For the same reason, it was during this period that a large number of thunderstorms - Perun shoots unkind creatures that have come to earth.

The weapons of God Perun are called "thunder arrows", "Perun stones", "arrows". The weapons of this God are considered to be an ax, a club, stones. By “stones” is meant an armchair, from which it is possible to strike a spark by striking another stone or striking iron. One of the beliefs says that fire once hid in a stone from its enemy - water. According to the description of a certain Strijkovsky, “the idol of Perkun held in his hands a stone made like lightning.” The ancient Slavs believed that various mollusks, arrowheads, spears, axes, bizarre stones that they occasionally found while cultivating the ground were Thunder Arrows, which were once fired by the Thunderer and went deep underground. Such things were revered as sacred, healing and capable of doing miracles. An alloy of sand (belemnite) was also called Perun's Stone. Often, amazing stones were found at the site of a lightning strike (melted sand) and they were called “arrows of Perun”, with which they treated, plagued those diseases that fear the wrath of the Thunderer.

Perunov color

Iris is considered the flower of Perun. The South Slavic peoples, Bulgarians and Serbs call this flower - Perunika or Bogisha. In the form of a six-petalled Iris, judging by the excavations, the sanctuaries of Perun were also made. In each petal, an unquenchable fire was kindled, or an unquenchable fire burned, and in the center stood an idol with an altar or altar. A symbol, an amulet of the name of Perun is considered not only Iris (a thunder sign with six petals, a thunder wheel, Perun's shield, thunder, Perunika, Perun's color), but also various hatchets, hammers. Hatchet amulets are often found at archaeological sites. It is believed that hatchets - amulets in the form of axes (hammers) - were given to young men and men as amulets, and were also a hallmark of members of the royal squad, whose patron, as already mentioned, was Perun. In addition, the symbol of the Thunderer is the image of lightning and an eight-pointed star, which is called Perunitsa. Symbols in the form of axes, lightning bolts, a six-beam wheel or a thunder sign with six petals, arrows are depicted on the temples of this God and his idols. A wheel with six spokes used to be depicted on all huts, clothing items, spinning wheels, weapons, utensils, etc. This symbol protected dwellings from lightning strikes and was considered protective. Similar symbols can still be seen in some villages, where houses with old architraves and traditional carvings are still preserved.

In connection with the study of the cult of this God, historians have revealed that the day of Perun is Thursday. In the Indo-European tradition, this day is associated with the Thunder God. The Polabs call Thursday Peräunedån, which can be translated as Perun's Day. Thursday before Ilyin's Day in the Slavic tradition is considered a holiday of equal importance. There is also a saying “After the rain on Thursday”, which refers us to ancient beliefs.

Perunov Day

Even after the adoption of Christianity, the cult of Perun remained strong. For example, in the Life of St. Jacek wrote that the inhabitants of Kyiv secretly gathered on one of the islands, where they worshiped the old oaks that grew there. The Galician-Volyn prince Lev Danilovich writes in one of his salaries: “And from that mountain to Perunov Oak, Mount Sklom. And from Perunov Oak to White Shores. A certain Feofan Prokopovich already in the Petrine era in his “Spiritual Regulations” forbade “singing prayers before the oak”, which clearly tells us that paganism, and faith in Perun, in particular, did not disappear anywhere and did not die, but lived and lives until now.

Perunov Day is traditionally celebrated on July 20. Since Perun patronizes warriors, all men carry weapons that are consecrated during the holiday. In honor of Perun in ancient times, a bull or a rooster was sacrificed. Also on this day, a ritual of making rain is often performed.

Hail Perun - the fire-haired god!
You send arrows to our enemies,
And you lead those who are faithful to you along the path of Rule.
You are honor and judgment for the brave warriors.
You are righteous, golden and merciful!

Veles book. Glorification of Triglav

God Perun is one of the main bright gods of the ancient Russian Vedic pantheon. God the Thunderer, leading the heavenly army along the military path, protecting the obvious world from the new and establishing this order on the border. Perun is the power that manifests itself in each of us with such qualities as honor, loyalty, dignity, courage, courage, steadfastness, determination, purposefulness, selflessness, will and devotion to the highest goal in life. He controls the observance of the world order in the universe. Perun leads his heavenly army against the forces of the dark Navi and is the patron of the class of warriors in the clear world. He is the guardian of order and the guardian of justice. In Rus', he was revered as the god of the princely squad.

Perun is a formidable, and at the same time merciful god, bringing grace to the earth in the form of rains that fertilize our land, therefore he is also considered the god of fertility, because in the spring Mother Cheese saturates Mother Earth with life-giving power with blessed rain. He is that force on the border of Navi and Reveal that does not allow the dark forces of the Navny world to penetrate into Reality and disrupt the harmony of the universe. The abode of the heavenly Perunova, according to the tales of the “Songs of the Bird Gamayun”, was a diamond palace on the highest mountain in bright Iria, towering, adorned with red gold and precious stones, under the arches of which, with a shining diamond, the Sun is a radiant luminary, and the moon is clear, and the stars, and the dawn is all the beauty of heaven was revealed in that palace. It is believed that the temples of Perun were located on hills, hills or mountains. Perun, along with Veles, the wise and luminous Dazhbog, is considered one of the most revered gods of ancient Rus'.

Perun - son of Svarog

See, Rusich, OUM!
OUM - great and divine.
He is one with us!
Praise him with the gods together!

Among the Baltic peoples, the god of thunder was revered as the main one in the pantheon of gods. Perkun, or Perkunas, among the Latvians was the supreme lord, the oldest father, sitting on the clouds and watching what is happening on earth. He was revered as the creator of lightning and thunderstorms ("thunder" - perkons, "lightning" - perkunija). In Latvian Courland, the word perkuhns means ‘thunder’. In folk songwriting, we find numerous references to the thunder god as rushing through the heavens on a chariot drawn by nine horses. He also has nine sons - three trinities: three strike, three more thunder, and the remaining three throw lightning. In conspiracies, the god of thunder was asked for help to ward off ailments and deliver from evil spirits and dark forces, in particular from envy and the evil eye. The Baltic Slavs, according to the testimony of the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammatik, worshiped the five-headed idol of the god of thunder: four of his faces were depicted on his shoulders and one on his chest.

In the traditions of the Lithuanian Zhmud tribe, the thunder god Perkun (Percunos) was the head of the pantheon of gods - a good god, the giver of blessings in the form of heavenly moisture, fertilizing the soil. His female hypostasis was also revered - Perkuna-tete - the mother of lightning and thunder. It was believed that she washed the divine face of the luminous Sun, after which she released him renewed and purified again to give light and warmth. And the spells of the Litvins also reflect the primary role of the god Perkun in their lives - he acted as a fighter of dark forces and a deliverer from evil demons.

The Prussians revered the heavenly triad of gods: the god of heavenly light, thunder and lightning Perkunas, the god of waters and fertility Potrimpos and the god of destruction and hell Poklus. In one of the main sanctuaries in Romo(u)ve in the province of Nadrovia, there was once a main sanctuary and an altar under a sacred oak with images of this triad of gods, and this oak was considered the abode of the triune god. In honor of Perkunas, the unquenchable fire “znich” always burned. The Prussians praised Perkunas on the days of the spring equinox, the priests addressed him as the lord of thunderstorms and storms, as well as the giver of gracious rain, so that bread and grass could be grown on fertile soil. At the same time, they asked him to take him away from Poklus, so that there would be no harm from the manifestation of his all-destroying whirlwind. One of the days of honoring Perkunas is February 2 (on this day they praise Perun - Gromnitsa, or winter Perunya). In folklore, there are tales that Perkunas pursued the god of the underworld Vyalnas.

We also see that in the veneration of the god of thunder, not only essential, but also etymological similarities can be traced in the name by which he was designated different nations afterwards. So, in the sacred "Avesta" - in Iranian mythology Tishtrya - the god of rain and the heavenly horseman, smashing the creatures of dark forces, leading the heavenly army, fighting the demon of drought Apaosha. Hurrian god of thunder and lightning Teshub. Among the Hutts, the thunder god Tara also corresponded to him. The Hittites and their kindred Luwians revered the thunder god Tarhunt. Pirva is the god of the Hittite pantheon of gods, patronizing warriors. The eagle is also his sacred bird. In Akkadian mythology, this is the god of storms, winds, thunderstorms, lightning and rain Adad, or Ishkur. The god of thunder in Celtic mythology was Taranis. The Etruscan supreme god of thunder, the just lord of heaven and light, the father of the gods, who controls the entire world order - Tin (i). Urartian god of thunder and war Teisheba. Thunderer, god of thunderstorms and lightning, patron of cattle and crops Perkele (Ukko) among the Finns. Prove, the god of fertility and justice, was revered by the Slavs who lived in German Wagria.

The name of the god Perun

The word "perun" in almost all Slavic dialects means "thunder". Lightning is also referred to as "perun". In Polish, the word piorun means ‘lightning’. In Latvian, "thunder" is referred to as pērkons. In Lithuanian, "thunder" is perkūnas and "thunderstorm" is perkūnija. As mentioned earlier, the Sanskrit word parjanya is ‘thundercloud, lightning’. At the same time, the word meaning ‘mountain’ is parvata, and we already know that the veneration of the god Perun took place on the hills. If we trace the obvious similarity of the names of the god of thunder in many dialects of the Indo-European languages, then we can confidently assert that the name of the god Perun has been preserved in its root basis among many peoples of Asia and Europe, and etymological similarity is also observed in the meanings of the name itself: thunder, lightning, rain clouds, mountain, hill, rock.

Image of the god Perun

On the images of Perun, we see in his hands a thunder club, an ax or a sword. Also, his weapon is a bow with gilded arrows, with which he fights against dark forces. Perun is usually depicted among the sparkling lightning in the sky. Accompanying Perun is a bull with unstoppable and furious strength, his formidable storm horse with a gilded mane, pearls of heavenly beauty humiliated, and on top of Perun's Oak, which is the sacred tree of the thunder god, the Heavenly Eagle sits, a faithful assistant in his glorious deeds.

Holidays dedicated to the god Perun

Perun will thunder with thunder in the clear sky.
Where Perun is, there is our land!

"Veles book"

It is believed that in the Chernobog time - during the winter season, Perun's face is hidden from people. Therefore, he reveals his mighty power to the obvious world during the bright time, when the gates of the Most High Svarga open. This time is indicated to us by the Sun when it turns on its way to the summer, this moment in time originates from the day of the Winter Solstice. The sacred days of Perun in the year are: Gromnitsa, or winter Perunya, is celebrated on February 2; Perun's day, celebrated on July 20, the day of warriors and farmers; as well as the day marked by the first thunder, which usually falls on the month of April.

The main holiday of the God of Thunder is Perun's Day, when military competitions are held, such as wall-to-wall fistfights and other folk amusements in which brave men measure their strength. This feast was opened by the kindling of a living fire. It is believed that the confrontation between spring and winter begins on Gromnitsa. Therefore, on this day, the god Perun was also revered. And with the first thunder, the gates of heavenly Svarga open, when the bright gods again come to the world of Reveal. As the god of heavenly fire, Perun (and Yarila) is also dedicated to the day of midsummer red, which falls on July 24.

Perun in the Triglav of the gods of the Russian Vedic pantheon

The triglav of the gods of the Russian Vedic pantheon is represented by the gods of the highest Svarga: Svarog, the creator of the universe, Perun, the guardian of the created world, Veles, the force of destruction (on time, appointed by God Rod) and subsequent rebirth. The gods personify various aspects of consciousness: Svarog embodies the forces of the superconscious, Veles the wise rules over the subconscious, Perun over the ordinary consciousness of man. As mentioned earlier, Perun and Veles represent two poles of power that are kept in balance by the law of the Rule. So, in the obvious world, visible to us, Reveal - Perun rules, in the other world of Navi, hidden from the eyes, but visible only to the spiritual eye that has seen, Veles rules. However, we must remember without fail, so as not to deceive ourselves by dividing concepts, that these worlds are interpenetrating. So both Perun and Veles stand as faithful guards on the border of the worlds, preventing the violation of the harmony of the universe.

Symbol of Perun. Protective symbolism. Amulets of Perun

The symbols of Perun are such protective signs as: Perun's sword, Kolovorot, Perun's Shield, Thunder Kolo (Perun's wheel, or Thunder), Fern Flower, Perun's helmet, Perun's arrow and axe. It is important to remember that together with the amulets, talismans and amulets that give protection to the gods, we bring powerful divine energy into our lives, the power of which will help only those whose thoughts are pure and actions are disinterested - only then do the amulets give divine protection and patronage. If a person uses them in dishonest deeds, embraced by the desire for personal gain and profit, then the power of the amulet will turn against him, protecting the world from such people and their bad deeds.

The rotisserie is one of the symbols of the god Perun, who monitors the rotation of the Heavenly Kolo, set in motion by him. So, it is believed that the center of the symbol of the sacred Kolovorot - an immovable point, is located in the center of the universe, where the sacred mountain Meru rises, and the heavenly Kolo moves around it. The rotation of salting (according to the Sun) personifies Perun's power, the world of Reveal, while the movement of salting - the world of Navi. The sign of Perunov is considered to be a six-pointed gyroscope.

Perun patronizes the warriors and defenders of the clans of our land, therefore one of his symbols is also the helmet of Perun, which is a warrior’s headdress, on which, as a rule, the following inscription is engraved: “Who, if not me, will protect your living, not the dead” . This is a male amulet, as it carries the energies of courage and bravery. The helmet of Perun is designed to protect the wearer from adversity and help protect his loved ones and relatives from trouble.

Another male amulet is the shield of Perun, a six-beam cross in a circle. In itself, the image of the shield, as the protective equipment of a warrior, already contains a powerful protective force, which is an invincible barrier against the misfortunes of enemies and ill-wishers.

The arrow of Perun is a powerful male amulet that helps to cope with difficult situations in life, but this sign especially helps warriors, as it protects against the enemy and his weapons.

The ax of Perun is a sign in the form of a battle ax, with which in former times our ancestors fought on the battlefield. This talisman gives the patronage of the Family and the protection of Perun only to those who fight in their lives for a just cause, following the path of Rule. The symbol will strengthen willpower, endow you with the ability to overcome any adversity.

Perun's sword - a symbol of reconciliation with enemies, looks like a cross - the intersection of four elemental forces of nature: fire, water, earth and air. It is a symbol of the world, uniting all the elements.

Thunder wheel - mystical sign, symbol of Perun, or Gromovik. It is also a male talisman, endowing its owner with courage, bravery and determination. Such a symbol has a very strong energy, therefore only those who live according to Conscience and who have such qualities as honor, loyalty, courage, determination can wear it.

Perun's color, or Fern Flower, is an eight-beam kolokres, a protective sign that is suitable for both women and men. According to popular beliefs, the fern flower blooms only once, on the night of Ivan Kupala. Endowed with mystical power, the symbolic image of this flower radiates powerful protective energy - it protects from slander and the evil eye, also averts danger and bestows the ability to foresee trouble.

Perunov's strength is justice

Our ancestors look from the heavenly Iriy at us, who neglected the bright truth. We are not worthy to be called Dazhbog's grandchildren, for only having pure souls, honoring the gods, can we, having merged with the gods into one Truth, live with our forefathers. So only we will be the grandchildren of the Dazhbogovs

Veles book. Part III. "Bus Proclamation"

The path of Rule is led by the god Perun, who establishes on Earth, in the manifest world, the laws of justice and truth. He opposes manifestations in the world of lies and dishonor. Each person has the freedom of will to choose which way to follow him in his life, along the direct Path of Rule, commanded by the gods and ancestors, or go the wrong way, against the laws of Rule, and rejecting the voice of Conscience - the highest law in man.

Those who follow the Path of Rule acquire the power of Perunov, which can be manifested in each of us in opposition to dark entities, thanks to which we are able to expel darkness from our souls, show the will to overcome all obstacles that arise on the Right Path, show courage and fearlessness in the fight against dark aspects of one's own personality. For in the age of the decline of morality and the eradication of righteousness, in which we happened to live, the demonic influence on us is inevitable, but it depends only on ourselves whether we show weakness and allow these dark qualities to take root in our souls, or with a fiery will of fire and bright unshakable faith in the Path of Rule we have chosen in life, that is, according to Conscience, we will not allow ignorance and vice to triumph over us.

P.S. God Perun manifests his strength in us by the manifestation of such qualities as determination, courage and justice. These are the qualities that we especially need to show now, at a time of ardent influence on our consciousness of the forces of ignorance, clouding and leading away from the Path of Rule. To do this, it is necessary, while maintaining the clarity of consciousness and maintaining in oneself the divine fiery torch, illuminating the Path, to show fortitude, ardent desire and will to overcome in oneself and get rid of inertia and passivity, to eradicate the clouding manifestations in consciousness.

Counteracting these forces, we are getting closer to the light and freedom from slavery to the forces of darkness and their influence on our consciousness. Follow in your life the main commandment of Perunova: “It is sacred to honor the gods and our ancestors, to live according to Conscience and in harmony with Nature!” For we are particles of a single divine essence, the fiery sparks of clear divine light shine in us with the bright radiance of Svarog. We are the sons of Perunov, the grandchildren of Dazhbogova, the great-grandchildren of Svarogov, the great-great-grandchildren of the Most High Progenitor.

Glory to Perun! May this glory fly to the heights of the golden Svarga!

Perun is the god of thunder and lightning, son. He occupied a leading position in the Slavic pantheon of the second circle. Over time, Perun became the patron of the prince and his squad. Outwardly, Perun looks like a middle-aged man of strong physique with gray hair and a dark golden mustache and beard. Perun is dressed in golden armor, and he is armed with a club and an ax, but the deity prefers to attack enemies not in close combat, but by shooting at them with his lightning. Perun was often represented riding a fiery horse or in a chariot, also harnessed by fiery horses.

Temple of Perun

Temples in honor of Perun were always arranged on hills, and the highest place in the district was chosen. Idols were made mainly of oak - this mighty tree was a symbol of Perun. Sometimes there were places of worship Perunarranged around an oak tree growing on a hill, it was believed that Perun himself means this the best place. In such places, no additional idols were placed, and the oak, located on a hill, was revered as an idol. As a sacrifice to the god of thunder, bulls were brought, and they were killed directly on the temple, cutting the throat, and when the blood stopped flowing, the carcass was buried right there in the ground.

Capabilities

Perun is the god of thunder, he is able to cause the strongest thunderstorms and throw lightning. Perun also has tremendous physical strength, which stands out not only among people, but also among other gods. Like his brothers, Perun is an excellent magician: he is able to change his appearance at will, can fly and create ghostly ones that disappear when magic stops working.

Sphere of influence

First of all, Perun patronizes warriors, he was revered after great victories, and they also asked for help before major battles. But the sphere of influence of the deity was not limited to military affairs: Perun protected Yav from Navi, driving them back to another world with lightning and fire.

Enemies

Always openly opposed to Perun, and many myths and legends about their mutual hostility have been preserved in history. However, this cannot be called enmity in the truest sense of the word, they are more like two brothers who do each other petty dirty tricks in order to attract attention to themselves.
