The national holiday Simeon the Summer Conductor is celebrated on September 14, 2018 (the old style date is September 1). In the Orthodox calendar, this is the day of veneration of St. Simeon the Stylite.

This Syrian monk is the founder of “pillarism,” which means continuous prayer on an open platform, pillar, or tower. Thanks to his strong faith and spirit, Simeon spent all his time on the pillar. He acquired the gift of healing spiritual and physical ailments and foreseeing the future. The rumor about him spread far beyond the borders of Syria. He helped many people find true faith. Even kings and emperors turned to him for advice. Saint Simeon lived for more than a hundred years and died while praying.

September 14: traditions and customs of the day

The canonical life of Saint Simeon had practically no effect on the Russian folk calendar. The day of his memory was associated with the beginning of a month, a season, a year. Let us recall that from the middle of the 17th century until 1700 in Rus', the New Year was counted from September 1 according to the old style. The popular definition of the day has two meanings: the end of summer and the end of the year. Simeon the Stylite (patron of this day) seemed to see off the warmest time of the year and ushered us into a new annual circle.

In the Old Russian language, the word “summer” had the meaning “year”, which was preserved in the words “chronicle”, “chronicler”, as well as in the age report “twenty or thirty years” and in the usual expressions “how many years, how many winters”. Therefore, Semyon Day is an important milestone in the traditional agricultural calendar.

From this day on, Indian summer began. The weather determined what the next three months would be like:

“If Indian summer is stormy, then autumn is dry. If it’s dry and hot, the autumn months will be rainy.”

The coming autumn reminds us of itself more and more. Although the sun is still warm during the day, the evenings and nights have become cold, and it gets dark earlier. The autumnal equinox will soon arrive (day and night will become equal).

Semenov Day occupied a special place among the peasants. They performed the “Osenina” ritual - the first meeting of autumn. From this day on, autumn games and round dances began. Wealthy people placed vessels with beer and mash at the gates and announced to the common people that “the honey has been brewed and the pies have been baked.” Round dancers approached the gate and were treated to food by the owners. Young women came out of the gate and offered treats first to the old people and then to the young.

By this date, the harvest of spring crops was completed and the sowing of rye was completed. After Semenov's day, seeds cannot be sown. Even with the onset of autumn, “stays” began - work in the evenings in huts by fire. It was customary on the eve of Semyon Day to extinguish all the fire, leave only the lamp, and light a new one in the morning. Our ancestors had a custom of making new fire from dry wood. Elderly people rubbed dry wood against a tree, and a guy or girl lit a new fire with a knitting needle, which was used to light stoves in bathhouses and huts, and light candles and a torch in the garden.

On this day they usually moved to new houses and celebrated housewarming. It was believed that this would bring happiness to the residents of the new house.

On Semyonov Day it was customary to bury flies. Cockroaches, fleas and other domestic insects were buried in the ground so that they would not be found in the house. People believed that if you kill a fly before Seed Day, then seven more flies will be born, and if you kill it after, then seven flies will die.

At the funeral of the flies, the girls put on their best clothes, made small coffins from dry leaves and various vegetables, placed the caught insects in them and, with “joking solemnity,” and sometimes with lamentations and tears, carried the insects out of the hut and buried them in the ground. The meaning of the ritual was not only to expel insects from the hut, but also to arrange a bride-show during the “fly funeral”, to show oneself in all its glory in front of the assembled spectators, especially in front of single guys looking for brides. After all, it was not for nothing that it was believed that from Semyon Day to Guryev (November 28) were wedding weeks.

Semenov's day was traditionally associated with the beginning of Indian summer. Based on the weather at this time, they predicted what autumn would be like. If Indian summer began with inclement weather, then autumn will also be rainy. If it is a clear day, autumn promises to be windy.

From Semenov's day they stopped mowing the grass and sowing the fields. Hard work on holiday was considered a sin. It was rumored that at night the devil would come to count the sparrows, so there was no point in getting involved in field work.

The beginning of the new year was a good time to conclude deals and agreements. It was believed that the agreement concluded with Seeds of the Flyer would bring many benefits.
